Total : 8.5/10

This is the oldest and best-known of the three chateaux.
In 1940, CORMEILFIGEAC became the property of the MOREAUD family. The vineyard was found to be in a pitiful state with a variety of sparse, old, sapless vines. René MOREAUD, an excellent wine grower, reconstructed the property.

From 1940 until his death in 1967 and despite the frost of 1956, he renovated the vineyards planting Merlot and Cabernet Franc, producing a fi ne quality wine, highly sought-after by the Bordelais and Libournais merchants for export. The vineyard is planted with 2 grape varieties: 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc.

The crop is aged in oak barrels. A third of the barrels is replaced every year. The Cormeil-Figeac wines are powerful, and rich with cedar and red berry aromas. They age well in bottle and are successfully distributed through the Nicolas chain in Europe, Canada, the United States and Japan.

Bernard Ginestet's guide
to the vinyards of France - 1986
Cormeil-Figeac is within the old limits of the huge of Figeac. In 1850, Charles Cocks listed it in his undred crus of Saint-Emilion. Right up to the beginning of this century, it featured among the name of the most famous "Graves". When René Moreaud bought it in 1980, the property was in a pitiful state of dilapidation, and it was he who restored the vineyard to hand it down to his son Robert in perfect condition. This latter continued the work of his father, a perfectionist, notably in carrying out extensive drainage work on the land. The third generation Claude and Richard Moreaud, are now in the vines and in the cellars, both fi red by the same wish to succeed. They are particularly keen to call themselves "vignerons" and not "growers cum producers cum managers", so distinguishing strongly between what is for them pure tradition and what they consider has become merely a job motivated by profit. "That is how we work, we rebel against modernization when it affects quality", they say together in chorus. And indeed, the Moreauds hold fast to this approach with success. They readily cite the poets to illustrate the virtues of their wine. "One evening the soul of wine sang in the bottle", they print on their advertising material, much in the style of Gault et Millau. The french poet Baudelaire, who wrote this verse, was also capable of observing with a more jaundiced eye. Elsewhere in his works, we find the following remark : "For the trader, honesty is speculating for profit." I shall not insist any further because in this case the owners can prove their sincerity. The yield per hectare, for exemple, is only 32 hectolitres on average. The 1972, 1973, 1977, 1984 vintages were not judged worthy of beeing château bottled. On the other hand, recent successful years are gaining a richness and an extraordinary fulness. "Our wines are not appreciated by people tasting in haste" the Moreauds reply, like an air they learnt by heart. We can confirm that the affair Cormeil-Figeac and the Moreauds is one of the heart and moreover a sound affair.
